Notes

8/30/00
A sad note received from Ed Perkins that
Kip Welzel (class of '58) had passed away
earlier this month.  Even in high school,
Kip was a gentleman.

Put us down on the "possible/probable" list for the Sept. gathering.
Bo Berry, Curt Shimp, Bob Heim, and I are planning get-together with Ted
Alderman in late July somewhere in Virginia.  Assume we will include Sylvia
and also try to pick up Jim Murphy.
Maybe some others vacationing in the area will want to join.  I am aiming for
Sunday, July 25   --  not sure if that coincides with what others are
thinking.

2/22/99  from Bob Ladd

Greetings To Everyone:
At Pete Schmieler's suggestion I did visit the Naperville Community
High School Web Site where I read some of the history of the school and
then, on a lark, I sent a message to their webmaster, actually a
webmistress (webmadam?) who is Jane Sharka who gets most of her paycheck
for being a Library Media Specialist.
In that E-mail I pointed out that Naperville Central High School was
really Naperville COMMUNITY High School until they built a second high
school, that the Class of 57 was the first class to spend four years in
the "new" high school, that we watched and heard the gymnasium wing
being built our first year in the new school, that "we" left money to
help pay for a brick/concrete school sign to be erected on the Aurora
Ave side of the building, and I gave some trivia info about how the
addition of the high school building came about, sometime around 1970.
Within an hour of so she sent me a nice response, this on a Saturday.
It's my suggestion that others of us might have some "living history"
to contribute to Ms Sharka.  For example ......
When we were students in the 1950's the school district consisted of
just four schools.  Ellsworth Grade School (east side), the Naper School
(west side) grade school, Washington Junior High School (the old
building) and Naperville Community High School.  Ralph Beebe was
Superintendent of Schools; he lived on Julian Street.
My mother tells me that the high school she attended back around 1920
was called the Naperville Academy and was housed in a small building at
the site of Ernie's 66 Gas Station, across the street from the YMCA
building on Washington Street.  Her class had 23 students, unusually
large for the time; she has outlived them all, except possibly one
person she lost track of some time ago.
Upon the occasion of my parents 55th wedding anniversary (1992) some of
the "old timers" visited.  Miss McDermott, my first grade teacher, was
there and so was "our" kindergarten teacher; her name escapes me.  This
lady told me that when we were in kindergarten (1944 maybe) she was the
only kindergarten teacher in the school district!  She taught mornings
at Ellsworth School and afternoons at Naper School. I do recall there
was a teaching assistant helping out.  Anyone else remember the big
sandbox in the kindergarten room at Ellsworth School, or going to school
in the dark because of year round daylight savings time during WWII?
Jane Sharka, NCHS WebMaster, has E-mail address of:
 webnchs@ncusd203.org
We started school in 1944?  Is that possible?  Really?  Are we old
enough to provide "living history"?
 Regards from Bob Ladd

11/2/97 - If you ever were to have been granted one wish by the genie -
to be young again, for just one night - last night was it!  The evening
began innocently enough with a 60' long boat trip off-shore to see the
picturesque sunset.  Do you have hundreds of sunset pictures too?
Bo Berry astonished most of the crowd by taking over and leading us all
in song.  There was an open bar on board and it served to get everyone's
juices flowing again.  The boat trip lasted until about 8:45 pm.  Obviously, the
night was still young.
A small contingent then found its way to Sloppy Joe's, Hemmingways's old
hangout, and the night began to rock and sway.  Permanent fixtures on the
dance floor were:  Gracie Herbert (my senior prom date), Pete Wohld, Barry
and Judy Fineout, Sharon Barkei, Cleo, Jim Adams, Joe Modaff, Lorainne Freed
(and the daughters),
Dave Swift, ShirLee and Wes, Ted and Karen Alderman and Barb Schmidt.
Jeanie Dobbert, though nailed to her chair,
had a foot-long grin of pearls through the entire affair.  The participants will never forget this
step back in time.  The local "youngsters" were even in awe.
Today we have a breakfast buffet at 10 AM, followed by slow exits to real life
shortly thereafter.  There have already been some re-arrangements of flights by
those unwilling to leave and putting up a good fight.
There are lots of pictures being taken, and I will begin posting to the Internet by Wednesday
at the latest.  Shirl and Wes will be following me back to Fort Myers on Monday for
a stop-over there.  I'll be there for a month, and doing all class web site editing with
my laptop and Netscape Gold running over AOL, which is minimized ... for all
you "techies".  I'll be scanning photos in with a Kodak 4x6 scanner.
Talk of a 2 1/2 year reunion is getting stronger.  Maybe California.  Stay tuned
The web site will continue on, even after reality sets in again..
11/1/97 - When Bo and Sally Berry arrived about 9:30 last night we had the final list
of attendees.  Which are:
Jim Adams
Ted and Karen Alderman
Boyd and Sally Berry
Sharon Barkei Campbell
Barbara Schmidt Cella
Duane and Jo Chenier
Jean Caldwell Dobbert
Carl and Judy Cook Doerr
Barry and Judy Fineout
Jim and Nancy Murfin Glasser
Bob Guler
Don and Carol Hamman
Grace Herbert
Gwen Wofford Hunter
Michael and Sylvia Boecker Jackson
Bob and Ann Jansen
Dave and Janet Kuhn
Cleo Bender Linn
Joe Modaff
Tim and Jane Murphy
Pete Schmieler
Curt Shimp
Dave Swift
Lorraine Freed Williams and Contingent
Pete Wohld
Wes and ShirLee Wilson
Dave Swift, with help from Joe Modaff and Bob Jansen, put on a seafood extravaganza
last night with most of the fare from around here.  The big hits were the oysters (sweetest I've
ever had) and the local lobster. The lobster kept coming and coming.  Nice!
Spike's 5 pages of trivia made its debut amid chortles and chuckles from the darkest
corners.  Winners in our area were Pete Wohld and Gracie Herbert.  Nancy Murfin
cheated a little, and was disqualified by the judge ... me
Another hot, oppressive day expected here with a cool front dropping through
tomorrow.  Big boat cruise tonight with dinner, etc.
We all miss you!
10/31/97 - Happy Halloween.  What a day to be in (or near) Key West.
This place looks like Mardi Gras year 'round.

At exactly 11:33 AM yesterday Cleo walked out of the Miami terminal; at exactly
11:33 I pulled up to the pre-arranged pickup point.  Then we were off right away to Little Torch Key,
28 miles from Key West.  Though the temp was in the cool fifties when I left Ft. Myers it
had gotten slowly warmer and more humid by the time I got to Miami.  Now the further we got
south the heaviness of the air really started to tell.
Not long after we arrived we headed for the pool where Bob and Ann Jansen were holding
court.  Murph and his wife, Jane, were along shortly also.  Barb Schmidt joined the crowd, and next was
Dave Swift, who thundered up in his orange '77 Corvette.  The 8 of us went to dinner in
Key West last night at the far end of Duval Street.
This morning the Aldermans came out to take a look-see, and Gwen was munching out of the breakfast
feedbag with her friend, Lou Ann, from San Antonio.  It seems that these class women of ours
haven't seen each other for at least five years because they are yapping constantly, filling in detail after
detail to each other ... while the men are just struggling to recognize everybody else.
Lorainne got here last night with her two daughters and immediately drug up grubsteaks
to head for Key West where she "could stay on a beach".
The remaining arrivals today. I'll keep you informed.

10/29/97 - Arrived in Fort Myers yesterday on my way to the big party in The Keys. Still not
smelling the Marlin Championship World Series T-shirts yet, but expect to run into iit when
I get to Miami.  Weather finally getting warmer. Brought temps in the 30's along with me to
northern Florida.
On the way here I encountered snow throughout most of Iowa. Then in Galesburg I left the I-system to visit
Spike Flanders and spend a few hours with him and his family.  Wife Angela cooked up a nice squash
dish for lunch.  At one point Spike and I got to laughing so hard about the old times that we
literally squirting tears.  Too bad Spike can't make the reunion.
I leave tomorrow (Thursday AM) to pick up Cleo at the Miami Airport, then head for The Keys.
10/17/97 - Just got the following message from Pete Wohld, which
may be interest to someone coming into the Key West aea by air.
I will be arriving at the Key West airport at 2:05 PM, Friday, and have reserved
a very small rental car. If anyone is needing a ride at that time, I can take at
least one. If necessary, I can get a larger vehicle to hold more. I will be returning
to the airport Sunday for a 2:00 PM return flight if anyone needs a
ride back to the airport.

9/9/97 - Bob sent out a memorandum to all classmates dated 8/14/97, so no
sense in repeating that news.
There is big news, however, on the change of venue. The headquarters
accomodations are being switched from Sugarloaf Lodge to Parmer's Place, because of the former's
mistake in letting out most of the rooms Dave Swift had reserved.  Dave has assured me
that we will like Parmer's better anyway.  Bob is currently in Nova Scotia, but will return on 9/11.
We will be staying on top of developments now so that we can be the first to advise you
of the schedule changes.  There is a decent block of rooms on hold at Parmer's and, as for now, they
need be notified by 9/15 of reservations.  So far I'm the only one to reserve.
Look for a more thorough update next week sometime.
Pete
7/3/97 - This section will be updated with increasing frequency as November gets closer ... latest
notes will always be at the top.
Bob Janzen expects we'll have about 40-45 people in attendance at the reunion
with about 25-30 classmates.  The schedule now looks like a welcome party at
Dave Swift's Friday evening, a big "hoop-de-do" boat dinner party complete
with steel drum band on Saturday evening, and a brunch on Sunday.
Our site can now be located on the search engines (look for Naperville class reunion).
There are lots of reunions shown with progressively younger classes showing more e-mail
addresses.  Some of these sites are quite interesting ... let us know if you have some ideas
about what we could include here.
Have a Happy Fourth

Pete
